“Making a report about BerliNON, about the NON, once it’s already gone it’s some kind of contradiction” says Johannes Thies, person responsible of BerliNON.
And I don’t have more than agree on that sentence. First of all, let’s clarify that the word NON is a derivation of the german word “nun”, and means “now”. Well, once you know that important aspect, we drive directly into the past-NON.
Taking place at the Sonnenalle number 145, at one of the spaces that belong to Institut für alles mögliche, we discovered a totally empty place once we arrived, because that’s what it’s for: An entire week where the most important thing is the now, living it through, feeling it and absolutely sharing it. In a world where the most of his habitants live based on his past memories or future plans, most of the times we forget that the magnanimity of the things happened in the exact same moment that you are breathing. You will not experience it again just at the moment where a millisecond already crossed through before your eyes.
While the hours and the days go on, we don’t have to forget that it was celebrated from the 6th till the 12th of May, a lot of different actions happened at BerliNON. Suddenly a typewriter appeared in the middle of one table. Brought by the organizer, all the people that came over by curiosity, sat in front of it and started to write what it came to their minds.
At another moment of the now, a guy started to peel some potatoes in order to make some colored stamps with aquarelles. Children and adults took over the now to left their track impregnated in a big poster who went directly to the NON-wall.
A now after, or afterNON, three sofas occupied the street and immediately after they were occupied by people as well, letting some different NONconversations at the top of the coach’s cushions. Because the now is also interact and exchange information, maybe the most important one, the human information.
Improvised concerts, encounters between animals, moments of craziness, boredom, special and enjoyable situations, a lot of beer… a cast of quotidian situations gathered in a short space of time like the NON.
The importance of NON stays reflected in a week full of sporadic, occasional actions brought by the now, by the human connection, burned in to the memory of all the assistants.
We asked some people at BerliNON what means NON for them in one movement, and those are the results:

Now it’s time to enjoy the NON-stop after-NON.
