At Cha Am Beach in Thailand, a simple holiday home has become a place for meeting and entertainment. The owners asked the architects, the Onion Studio based in Bangkok, to turn their home into a meeting place, a space that looked more like a playground, a place for interaction and communication.
Running, climbing, hiding and playing are the physical activities proposed, which exceed the boundaries of the Thai common lifestyle. For this project the designers were inspired by the American cartoon ‘Tom and Jerry’: the house, in fact, looks like a big piece of cheese in which children can play.
The paths and passageways are the core of this project. The designers added to the central corridor, which already exists in the home, a vertical circulation obtained by inserting five nets that become the new floors of the house, with different heights and angles. Each new floor is connected to the upper one through a system of metal stairs and ramps.
The study of the colour increases the visual experience of the home interiors. All common areas, including the main hall, living room and dining room, are painted in white. The private spaces, however, are of different colours: mustard yellow for the master bedroom, purple for the guest room, blue and light green for the children’s bedrooms.
